Poll: Do you use a cell phone?

Occasionally I borrow my mom's cell phone when she thinks a trucker might ass rape me on the side of the road, but for the most part, I never use cell phones. I hate when people talk on the phone and interact with other (i.e. drive or try to buy something) at the same time. It's incredibly rude. My mom does it all the time, and it's very upsetting.

I've had it for a few years. It became essential when I was driving a deathtrap that had stranded me a couple of times. For a long while I used it very very rarely. Now I use it every day simply for the fact that my work phone doesn't show up on caller ID when I call home and my cel phone does and I want the phone to actually be picked up. :)

But I never use it FROM home.

I got one about 4 years ago primarily because I wanted a phone to use in case of an emergency given that I was wandering through not so great neighborhoods for my social work internship but now I use it fairly regularly that it's an essential crutch in my life.  I occasionally use it at home primarily to make LD calls as my landline plan doesn't have long distance included for free and my signal strength at home is pretty decent most of the time.  But I probably will switch to another cell carrier soon, as the reception is too spotty everywhere else in NYC.  Damn those tall buildings.

i'm with you on this one :) i don't have one, and don't want one either. i don't have the money to buy one for a start, let alone to maintain one. plus i can't stand other phone users. at work i found it highly rude when people came to the checkout and spent the entire time on their phone and were so consumed with their conversation that they didn't even say thank you as they walked out. plus in school it was infuriating for me when i was trying to make conversation with my friends at lunch and they were all sat there playing snake on their phones and completely blanking me. :D i hate phones. i told my parents last year that if they got me one for christmas i'd never speak to them again. :D

I used to use one as my primary phone, but now I live in a cell dead zone that doesn't look like it's going to get any better any time soon. So, now it's pretty much a "when I'm out' or "when I'm at work" phone.

... "I have a phone, and all the accesories, just no service because I can't afford it right now!" option???

...Gee, I guess I am the only one pitiful enough to need THAT answer.

I used to carry around my pager just for the clock when my service ran out. lol

My cellphone is my main line phone. The major drawback to this is that I have to give it out sometimes to companies, but since it saves me a lot of money every month, I'd rather have one phone instead of two! I find the convenience of being out and having a friend be able to get in touch with me -great-. (Or vice versa - 'Do you want anything at the store, while I'm here?')

I do all of my long conversations in the comfort of my own home, though, so I don't think I'm much of a rude phone person.

If my new place was in a dead zone, I don't know what I'd do.  Probably switch plans.  Ellen is right though, it's a matter of saving money and convenience for me.  It makes it SO much easier meeting up with people, and with the free long distance, it makes talking to you guys much cheaper.

Why I use a cell phone:

1. Cheaper than the school phone system
2. Cheaper than calling cards
3. Calls to Canada don't cost twice as much, therefore, I get to call my boy as often as I want!
4. Unlimited nights and weekends. Who invented this? They should be given a plushie.

My cell phone IS my phone. Has been for over a year now... almost two years, in fact.

I miss absolutely nothing about land-lines. The expense, the hassle... bah.

My cell is a portable that's always with me. And if I want to "disconnect"... I just turn the sucker off. :)

As for rude cell phone behavior... I couldn't agree more. I hate people who talk to me while they're on their phone at the same time.... but then, I hate that with land lines too... I think it's just a phone-in-general thin.

I've started using it more for long distance, but I really wish they'd make a "home wireless" phone - basically a phone that's the size of a regular wired telephone but connects on a wireless network. because I just can't talk on something that doesn't properly fit in my hand and where I can't talk into the microphone.

and now it seems that manufacturers of regular phones have also thrown that philosophy out the window, and instead of making "face shaped" phones, they are making flat phones. makes it really hard to find a new phone.

I can't find my cell phone. It's in my apartment -somewhere-....

My cat used to play with my phone a lot last year. Best way to find it was to ring it from the landline, then work out the direction the ring tone was coming from before the answering service takes over.

Once I suspected the cat had punted it under some piece of furniture though, it turned out to be in my pocket. Don't laugh; I've been known to look for my glasses while wearing them.

ok, i selected 'yes, but only when i'm out', but i -do- use it from home to call my mom and such and other long distance calls that were getting -way- too spendy on my regular phone bill.

but at work i silence it coz we canna use them on the res floor, then i inevitably -forget- to unsilence it lately when i'm done with work.

so i guess it's sorta tough for people to call -me- on it anyhoo :P

I have had several cell phones. Actually, I was recently cleaning out some storage and found my first phone, a huge clunky Motorola 9000. Man you could pound nails with that thing. Anyway, they were great when I was on the road all the time but I dropped it when I got a job that put me closer to land-lines.

I would have a cellphone as my home phone line except that I am still on dial-up internet. I am still waffling on cable vs. adsl and well, one of the pluses for cable is that I could politely tell the phone company where to jam themselves. Partly because they are the @#$%^&@ phone company and partly because the local calling area for the cell covers more area that I would like to call than the landline does. Hmmm..... sounds like I may get a new cellphone soon.

When I was working as a substitute teacher, a cell phone was very helpful, but I still resented having such a vile, evil thing. Frankly, I'm concerned by the possibility that cell phone towers could have harmful effects -- weren't there some studies done about brain tumours in children living near cell phone towers?

ohhhh probably. they do lots of silly studies.
