Frucon group at dinner for EFO Show - Hugh's Room

Discussion: Frucon group at dinner for EFO Show - Hugh's Room
John J. Ryan · 20 years, 5 months ago

For those of us who want to get dinner at Hugh's Room before the EFO show, I have started a "Frucon" group for the show. When you call up Hugh's Room to order EFO tickets, you can ask to make dinner reservations with the Frucon group. This group can keep building and building until the night of the show, so it could grow pretty large depending on how many people want to sit at a reserved table. The person I spoke to at Hugh's Room was very nice and had no problem with this, and he'll be in touch with me to see how the group is coming.

If you don't want to be a part of the Frucon group at the show, you will be seated first come first served at any of the unreserved tables, or you'll sit at the table you've already reserved for yourself. Or feel freeto call and change your reservation to the Frucon group.

This will be the easiest way for us to sit together as a group at the EFO show and have guaranteed tables before everyone else. The number to call for dinner reservations is 1-416-531-6604. I'll see you there!

Speaking of which, who isn't going to this? Who's sticking around at the hotel on Friday night with us? :)
lawrence Back · 20 years, 5 months ago
I'm still undecided. but if people are sticking around with guitars and such, I'll probably be up for that. :)
Phoenix Back · 20 years, 5 months ago
I'm rather undecided ... Wormy, can you please help me with my decision. What are you gonna do?
soul groove feline Back · 20 years, 5 months ago

Reinhard... well, i really *do* want to go to the show... i really like EFO, and i've only seen them twice or so, and it's not every day that EFO *and* Fordy come to Toronto... but then again, it depends on certain factors...

thus, i need help with my decision. What are *you* gonna do? :)

Phoenix Back · 20 years, 5 months ago
Strawberry shortcake. Yum. Oh I digress....

Same feelings here. And I haven't seen a frulad sinc FRFF Y2K but ... and there's a big but ... it's a matter of priority and since I've learned yesterday that I speak Goovie-EnglishTM anyway I've finally decided that I'll be staying with  the ace of nitwits and  Nameless Numberhead Man and all the others who will be there. Rock.

So hang out with ussss.

goovie is married! Back · 20 years, 5 months ago
yay, i was just about to post a topic about this.

neal and i are soooooo not going to efo. we'll be getting in around 6 or 7 that night, so we'll probably be hanging out at the hotel. if anyone wants to do some low-key, non-efo-related stuff, we're up for it.
zil Back · 20 years, 5 months ago
i dunno what I'm doing (what else is new) but I'll prolly be TIRED from the plane and then the bus ride from hell! so I'll prolly not be up for much more than being a zilblob in a corner in the hotel somewhere.

From the way they talked at Hugh's tonight when I was booking a ticket - ticket sales for the show are very poor. The show's going on apparently but they sound disappointed in the (so far) poor showing....
Phoenix Back · 20 years, 5 months ago

On the one hand I'm very sad to hear this - on the other hand this gives me still time to make up my mind. *pondering*

goovie is married! Back · 20 years, 5 months ago
no, reinhard...stay with usssssss. :D
bored, bored, bored.... Back · 20 years, 5 months ago
I've reserved my ticket. So there'll be at least 3 of us *g* I hope sales pick up, and I'm sure they will - after all, it's still almost 3 weeks away. Most people, at least local people, don't book for shows weeks in advance. The show's going to go on regardless though, right?
John J. Ryan Back · 20 years, 5 months ago
Also, EFO is doing >Play to advertise the show, that should help with walk-up sales. But if ticket sales don't pick up, we could end up with a private EFO/Fordy show.
Bruce Rose Back · 20 years, 5 months ago
Doggone it. For a private EFO/Fordy show, I'd make the drive. Any way we can guarantee that? :-)
Josh Woodward Back · 20 years, 5 months ago
Maybe that's because everyone remembers that EFO were big babies about SARS?
hkath Back · 20 years, 5 months ago
I doubt it. The problem is that no one remembers them at all. If they'd come last year, they'd have been riding the after-waves of a really favourable reception at Summerfolk (Fruit played Hugh's Room as their first indoor show in Canada and packed it with Summerfolk attendees, so it's safe to say Hugh's Room is where we all go in the off season).

Since the May 2003 show got cancelled and it's now almost one year later, I think probably a lot of festival-goers whose curiosity was piqued at Summerfolk in 2002 have now simply forgotten all about EFO.

I mean, I'm sure there are tons of decent festival performers who, because I have not heard their names or anything about them since whatever festival I saw them play, have left my consciousness. Out of sight, out of mind.

I've heard that there is more to the story than that, though I don't know details. I'd be less quick to make judgements before knowing what was really behind their decision to cancel the show.
Shelly Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
thank you, gella, for the thought about not making judgements before knowing what was behind it.

they were NOT babies for cancelling the show. the band doesn't have to state their reasons for cancelling. they had a legit reason. they rescheduled it. it should be the end of the story.

and to think john JUST last night said that he thought y'all had gotten over the whole thing since it was last may. apparently he thinks too highly of some of you.

so much for idealism.....

hkath Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
So, Josh teasing about EFO being babies is not OK, but you saying that Josh is below you is? Hm... I loves it. Sacred cows are a fascinating phenomenon.
Shelly Back · 20 years, 4 months ago

ok, firstoff, saying that josh is -below- me was paraphrasing...unless i can't read my own writing.....

if josh was joking, i couldn't tell; unfortunately, online does not allow inflection, so hence, a lot is lost in translation.

i merely said there was a reason. i, among others, said that the band didn't have to divulge the reason. i {being too much of a pollyanna myself} was encouraged by the fact that john believed that people's 'wounds', as he put it, were healed with the efo may cancellation dillyo{since lisa's have been and she flew from friggin vancouver for the show they cxld}

i'm just saying that.....well...never mind. it obviously doesn't matter anyhow....

hkath Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
We had fun with Lisa that weekend. I myself am not bitter, nor do I know of anyone else who is. Many people are skipping the show. I am not one of those people. I like EFO's music, have since about early 1998, when I first heard them.

But if every single time someone mentions the cancellation, you jump in on the band's behalf, ultra-defensive, and start preaching about how they need not justify their decision with an explanation (which indeed is true, although it does not need to be reiterated every time the subject is broached, nor does it mean that no one is allowed to speculate, nor does it mean that anyone who expresses disappointment in EFO's decision - such as Josh - is wrong) I may seriously consider removing myself completely from the EFO sphere.

This agitation is completely overblown, and it gives me a hell of a headache every time it comes back. At this point, they're hardly worth the trouble.

And yes, you did imply that Josh was beneath you:

and to think john JUST last night said that he thought y'all had gotten over the whole thing since it was last may. apparently he thinks too highly of some of you.

It's just a band. Seriously, it's time to relax. If I jumped in like this every time someone took a jab at Jian, I wouldn't have time for anything else in my life.
Sara Woodward Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
*sigh* Gella would have been less quick to make a judgement. that's her right and that's fine. it's also Josh's right to make a judgement (based on a potentially different set of facts) or even a joke and mention it. *shrugs* it'd be an awfully quiet world....
A.J. Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
Ok, reading Kath's response jogged a response of my own. I didn't really know EFO's cancelling the show WAS a big deal. I know we sometimes joke about them being afraid of SARS, but I didn't know that there was anything like resentment. Bands cancel shows. It happens.

Now personally I have no trouble believing that there were "other reasons" that the band cancelled the show. And I agree that they certainly have the right to keep those reasons secret if they want. HOWEVER, IF they choose to keep those reasons secret, I don't think they have the right to expect people not to speculate.

It goes both ways. If they chose not to explain themselves, then it is perfectly legitimate for others to speculate or even ASSUME reasoning to fit the situation. It is human nature to do that. Being afraid of SARS is just as plausable a theory as any other, and with the lack of any refuting evidence, it is just as good a theory as any other. If some people want to believe that that theory (which fits the facts) is correct, then that is their right. If the band were actually bothered by people making assumptions, they always have the right to issue an explanation, which would then render the SARS theory less plausible.

Band memebers are big people (Hanson and the Jackson 5 excepted) and they can take care of themselves. They really don't need defending.

I didn't ever have reservations about going... it's just that I finally made the call to make reservations.

Has the fact that Fordy is definitely opening changed anyone's thoughts about not going to the show?
goovie is married! Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
we're still just hanging out at the hotel...since we aren't getting in til around 6pm, we'll probably be too tired to rush around for the show--especially if work on friday is anything like it's been the rest of this week. *dives back into huge pile of paperwork*
Talcott Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
Yeah, I think that's where I'm going to be too.
I want to see the show, but the more I've thought about it, the more I'd rather just hang out with people for more time too.

Nik Chaikin · 20 years, 4 months ago
THe reservation was $16, what does that cover?
ChrisChin is Getting Old Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
It's the cover to get into the venue (i.e. just the admission) and the option of making a reservation for a table for dinner. If you sit with the Frucon group, I'd assume that they will expect you to buy food. Dinner/drinks will cost you extra.
Nik Chaikin Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
That's what I figured, thanks.
