Canadian Music!!

   Discussion: Canadian Music!!
Joy- new picture! · 20 years, 4 months ago

So, my friend Kat and I have an all-Canadian radio show. We play the obligatory Hip, Rheostatics, Fruvous, GBS, Worms, Tory Cassis, BNL, etc. But we want more! What are your favourite Canadian albums? (other than Fruvous and GBS... I have all of those)

By the way, the show is on Friday nights at 11 Eastern Time at http://wsrn.swarthmore.edu

    Joni Mitchell's fine...

Most of my favorites have been mentioned already but not all.

    • Ashley MacIsaac

    • Tanglefoot

    • Taxi Chain

    • Slainte Mhath

    • Gordon Lightfoot

Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
I just noticed this. One of the songs on VA, the Slainte Mhath album is called Attack of the Flying Slugs. That should be your shows themesong.

by the way the group's name is pronounced Slawncha Va. I believe that is Irish for "Good health," a traditional toast.

    I love the Ghandarvas!!!

They had a radio hit a while back with First Day of Spring from their album "Soap Bubble and Inertia."

Their second album, "Kicking in the Water" is my fav - any track from that i'd play (and did on my old indie radio show).

Their 3rd and i believe final album, "Sold for a Smile" was not as good as the first two, but still worth a listen.

i found this list too - may help! http://www.fmpweb.hsd.uvic.ca/merb/ensembles.htm

I should add that Lindy (not to be confused with Lindi) is awesome and I wish to write children's books about him. And Ron Sexsmith thinks I'm cool.

I keep forgetting who's Canadian and who's just obscure.

hkath Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
re: Lindy - I second that he's awesome, and wish I could find a copy of his damn album somewhere. I have about half the tracks on mp3, which just makes me twitch for the other half. And I believe he falls into both the Canadian and obscure categories. Is the children's book what evolved out of Bob n' George?

There's also Luke Doucet and Veal, Royal City, Andy Stochansky (how has no one mentioned Andy yet?)... and I can't think of any more that aren't, like, glaringly obvious :)
Victoria Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
Which album? I've seen his first album at the big Sam the Record Man at Yonge and Dundas (which is neat, seeing as I thought that was out of print).
hkath Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
Ummm... either? Damn. I didn't remember he had two. I think someone I lived with (most probably Mikey, but it could have been Dave) used to have Bliss. If that is even the album name. The one with the song Bliss on it, anyway.

Y'know the problem with his recordings, though? He doesn't get drunker as the record progresses, and then ask for volunteers to drive him home. That really hurts his studio work ;)
angelmusicmaven Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
Thanks to Kath for mentioning ANDY STOCHANSKY. I thought I was going to have to drop some 'bows all up in here. I can! Not! Wait for his new cd and tour... Unless I missed something, I'll add Spirit of the West and the Odds to the mix for a little Vancouver action!

    we *loves* the poutine.

although i encountered a notion that made me gag this wknd. gourmet poutine -- "gourmet" meaning with foie gras chopped in amongst the curds. I mean, poutine's dandy ... but manohman, what a way to ruin fat goose livers!
    stealthlori · 20 years, 4 months ago
... that no one has mentioned Anne Murray? *ducks and runs*

Seriously: the Wyrd Sisters. The Rankins and the Barra MacNeils, both Celtic-y. The Rankins aren't recording as a family anymore, due to death and creative projects, but their older CDs are still available I think.

And then there's the Band. (I am, like, sooooo old.)

Richard Seguin was huge in Quebec for at least 15 years. Don't know what he's been up to lately.

Native musicians include Kashtin and Susan Aglukark. Kashtin sings in French and Montagnais(<--I think); Aglukark in English and Inuk. She's won a few Junos.

    erm. something like that.
stealthlori Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
well my goodness. who knew that would cause such a pronounced reaction?

i <3 them. i mean, they have strong voices, and instruments they can play, and some good songs. and sometimes they tell bawdy tales. what's not to like?

where did you encounter them? they're gonna be at SMAF this year. *dances*
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
that's where we saw them, at SMAF. They had one song I liked. They seemed to take themselves very seriously.
nitsita Back · 20 years, 4 months ago

I've never beena huge fan of Richard Seguin....

    .....

But... umm... Raoul Duguay, Richard Desjardins, Les Charbonniers de l'Enfer (a really awesome acapella group) must be added to the list.

Joy- new picture! · 20 years, 4 months ago
Since I can't run out and buy everything all these amazing artists have ever done, does anyone have a favourite album or two to recommend? *flutters eyelashes*

    Mary Lyons
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
Here are some basics you need to know.

Leonard Cohen: Songs of Love and Hate and Songs from a Room.
Joni Mitchell: Blue and Court and Spark
Natalie MacMaster: Fit as a Fiddle Blueprint
Ashley MacIsaac: Hi How Are You Today
Luther Wright and the Wrongs: Rebuilding the Wall

I don't think you can go wrong with anything by Natalie or Ashley. I picked the most radio friendly CDs of theirs.

Joni and Leonard have so many good songs you could go a long time playing just those two and it would be a good show.

Danny Michel - In the Belly of a Whale
Stephen Fearing - That's How I Walk or So Many Miles: Live
Blackie and the Rodeo Kings - King of Love

Ron Sexsmith - either his self-titled disc or Cobblestone Runway
The Supers - Spklanng! (if you like power pop) or Mystery on Pop Mountain (if you like folk)
    Luke Doucet - Aloha Manitoba
    Veal - The Embattled Hearts
