Discussion: Ben Folds/Guster/Rufus Wainwright Summer Tour
John J. Ryan · 20 years, 3 months ago

Since a lot of people here like 1, 2 or all 3 of these acts, I thought I'd mention they'll be doing a triple-bill tour of the outdoor ampitheater circuit from June-July. Each act will get an equal set, and there will be some inter-act playing on each other's sets. Already they are confirmed for Wolf Trap on 6/29, and at the Fleet Center in Boston on July 8 & 11.

I'm just hoping they don't play Jones Beach on July 4th weekend, it would be yet another great show I'd be missing for a wedding commitment.

Shelly Back · 20 years, 3 months ago

yay wolf trap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

*thinks* where -am- i gonna be that weekend.........

*makes mental note to make no plans!*

POI: it's at the fleet boston pavillion, not the fleet center. fbp=cool [relatively] small amphitheater on boston harbor. fc=humongous stadium in downtown boston. same sponsor, very different experience. i've seen shows in both, and the fbp is muuuuch cooler--literally and figuratively. this tour will be awesome there. last time i was there was for the indigo girls.... *tear*

dangit.. i had to miss Rufus already this year, cause I was poor and it was a 21+ show... so, i'm gonna pray he comes back... i love that man *sniffle*
goovie is married! · 20 years, 3 months ago
it's just ben and rufus here at ravinia. which is definitely fine by me. guster i can take or leave since they decided to become a boring pop band like every other boring pop band.

oh, look. a can of worms.

*opens*

*runs away*

Pop? Yeah. Boring? I disagree.
goovie is married! Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
wxrt has been playing "amsterdam" constantly since it was released as a single. and it disappointed me so much, cos i know guster is (or has been) capable of much more interesting music. i still haven't bought the new cd. but seriously, if the rest of it is really good, let me know.
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 3 months ago

I really like it. And the first song (not amsterdam, but I don't have a track listing) gets stuck in my head for days on end.

angelmusicmaven Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
I'm way disappointed... I love Ryan's voice and always will, but Guster got pretty boring, or, at least, THIS album is way boring compared to how previously, each album had gotten better... I thought Lost and Gone Forever was great. There's a couple songs I like on the newer one, but their sound seems watered down to me now.
goovie is married! Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
"watered down." exactly. lost and gone forever, on the other hand, is brilliant. except for "rainy day." :)
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
See maybe that's where we all differ. I agree that L&GF was brilliant and that the new one isn't as good. But I personally don't have a lot of affection for Goldfly or Parachute. Good enough, but they kinda bore me. So even getting an album that's not as good as the previous one I'm still happy because to ME it's better than the Guster they were before L&GF. Does that make any sense, even if you don't agree? :)
angelmusicmaven Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
Yeah, I catch yo' drift... actually, I always liked them more live than in studio by FAR anyway, you know, some bands you'd rather see than listen to a record... L&GF is the only cd I ever listened to on a regular basis. But I have the pre-Guster "GUS" version of Parachute, so that's pretty cool
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 3 months ago

I actually listened to the album again on my way home from work and I will concede some of it is rather boring. But the stuff I like...I *really* like, so I have a hard time getting down on the band about it, ya know? :)

And a correction...earlier I said the first song gets stuck in my head for days on end. I meant the second song. Which I actually feel wouldn't be too out of place on L&GF

lawrence Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
exactly. I know I'm in a very small minority who think Parachute is their best album. but it's the only one I can listen to all the way through without skipping any tracks (even Scars and Stitches and Dissolve)

I think that they should take the production experience they've gained from making their three newer albums and remake Parachute. It would be even more amazing then.
nate... Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
oh, well, yeah.... the whole newest album is laaaame.

But, I'd still like to see them, as I'm sure they still play the good songs.
:)
Josh Woodward Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
See, I was in this camp when it first came out. Now I love it. There are some goosebumpy beautiful songs (Diane, Careful, Come Downstairs) and some very fun songs (Amsterdam, Jesus on the Radio, Red Oyster Cult). Yeah, there are a lot of stinkers and half-baked songs, but not enough for me to overlook the yummy nuggets.
nate... · 20 years, 3 months ago
yeah... the only one I'd really like to see is guster...

Ben Folds solo does nothing for me..... and Rufus.... well, about the same.
*shrugs*

So, I'll wait for some guster shows. :)
They'll be cheaper and better!

Beth · 20 years, 3 months ago
Penn's Landing, eh? I wonder how much that will cost. I really need to see Ben Folds again. I last saw him, when he opened for Tori Amos last summer. I've liked Rufus for quite some time, and I'd like to finally get the opportunity to see him. But I have zero interest in Guster. But I admit I know every little about that band.
John J. Ryan Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
Thanks for the info, looks like I'll have a good time at Starland Ballroom. July 5th I have the day off, so i can actually wait in line! Yea!!!
Talcott · 20 years, 3 months ago
Hmmm... they're comming here, but after I'm not...
Andrea Krause · 20 years, 3 months ago

I love how the Oakdale doesn't even have them on the site so I can't see about tickets. Sigh. I want to at least know if I can afford it!

Misch · 20 years, 3 months ago
High Falls festival sight in Rochester. Damn, that's a Saturday too. When do tickets go on sale?

I might just have to shell out the ticketbastard charges for this one...
Rimbo Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
*weeps at the total omission of any venue remotely close to Minneapolis.*
iPauley Back · 20 years, 3 months ago

W00t! I won't be working saturdays anymore by then! *score!*

-- Pauley

John J. Ryan · 20 years, 3 months ago

Well, we can hang outside the venue (Open air venue) and listen to the show for free. This was Gordon's idea, sincea lot of NYC area people didn't feel like shelling out $42.50 (before ticketbastard) for tickets. The idea is to go to an area outside the venue where you can hear the music just as easily. It's free, and a lot of people do this fom what I hear. we can have a picnic dinner and everything. Show starts at 6 for Summerstage, only question is which date? The 13th or the 14th?

Kat Kunz · 20 years, 3 months ago
...because I have my tickets for the debut show in Dayton. w00t! second row... and i haven't seen either rufus or ben folds since 2001, so this is a HUGE treat. oh, and those guster guys rock, too. :D
