emilie is CRANKY · 20 years ago
celine dion: good or omg so bad? discuss.
Annika Back · 20 years ago

Good as far as her singing voice goes... and she's probably a good person... I tend to like her shoes as well..

dave "buh" Back · 20 years ago
what's this about vaseline now?
danced with Lazlo Back · 20 years ago
heee...!
stealthlori Back · 20 years ago
now that was a little creepy.

(when is a tub not a tub? when it's a jar.)
Bender Back · 20 years ago
She's best when being burninated by Zarhill's Big Rock Rockers (Featuring Kendar) in an intergalactic battle of the bands.

But maybe that's just me.

oO that was a little creepy... Oo
Gordondon son of Ethelred · 20 years ago
How about so mediocre?
Phoenix · 20 years ago
the best about Celine Dion is the Arrogant Worms' song ;-D
sheryls Back · 20 years ago
hey, and she RULED in Terrance and Phillips "Not Without My Anus" :P

basically... EVILBADOMGDIEDIEDIE!

:D

seconds nate's sentiments. I don't think I could have said it more eloquently. :)
Starfox Back · 20 years ago
I don't find her to be that wide-ranging in terms of talent. She's got a good voice, and good arrangement, but after a while all of her material sounds the same. She's very one-dimensional as a songwriter in my opinion.
nitsita Back · 20 years ago
..she doesn't write her songs...
lawrence Back · 20 years ago
so that would make her zero-dimensional in her songwriting. :)
nitsita Back · 20 years ago
what you said... to the power of at least infinity ;)

im with you nate
rufus t firefly · 20 years ago
She has a voice like a band saw cutting aluminum siding in a small enclosed space.

AND she's so ugly she could stop watches.

Other than that I'm sure she's fine.
soul groove feline · 20 years ago
i like Celine Dion.

yes, i really do. however, i can't say i like any of her albums after "S'il Suffisait D'aimer". much of the newish, "radio-friendly" stuff she's done all sounds the same.

"Live A Paris" was a musically stunning album. "Les Derniers Seront Les Premiers" is a great song, as is "Pour Que Tu M'Aimes Encore". "Au Coeur Du Stade" was also a great album. there are just so many little intricacies in the delivery of the songs.

or at least there was, until crap like "let's talk about love" and "a new day has come" came along. ick.

shes a horrible singer... when it comes to mechanics. sure, shes got a pretty voice, but doesnt sing properly. She'svery nasal and sings from her throat, not the diaphragm, where sound should come from. Once earlier on in her career she lost her voice completely for two weeks (like, couldnt even TALK) because of this. allegedly the doc told her that would happen again and her vocals are so strained she could lose her voice permanently later on.

plus, shes annoying

:)

Bender Back · 20 years ago
actually, the support should come from the entirety of the torso. locking your diaphragm is unnatural.

the sound should be resonant and the air focused at the ridge behind the front of the teeth, and, really, the sound all comes from mouth shape.

don't get me started on those accusations of people singing "nasally".
*joolee* Back · 20 years ago
Isn't the diaphragmn'd an involuntary muscle?
Bender Back · 20 years ago
exactly.

people think that locking your stomach muscles = using diaphragmatic support, a physiological fallacy that many teachers still use, which works against relaxation.

the word "diaphragm" needs to be removed from the vocal instruction vocabulary when it comes to breath support. you're really using your lower abdominal muscles, pushing down.
danced with Lazlo Back · 20 years ago
My chorus teacher in high school told us to forget that diaphram crap, diaphram is involuntary. She told us to sing from our genitals.
Bender Back · 20 years ago
exactly.

that's what my teacher refers to as "bearing down" :)
nate... Back · 20 years ago
doesn't sing "properly"?

I'm sorry, but that's just silly.
That's like saying someone doesn't paint "properly" or play guitar "properly".

:D

That said, yeah, she sucks ass.

Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years ago
No it isn't any more than someone driving with his feet wouldn't be driving properly. There are many activities which have a right way of doing things. yes some people can overcome poor mechanics and still succeed but it is far easier if you do things right.
Bender Back · 20 years ago
singing is a very physical thing.

in order to do it safely and to produce the desired sound, the body has to coordinate properly.

nate... Back · 20 years ago
I see your point, but I still disagree.

Some of the best voices I've ever heard were from people who don't sing "properly".

Bender Back · 20 years ago
do you know this for a fact?

any style can be achieved through proper technique.

it all comes down to not causing damage.
nate... Back · 20 years ago
Yup.
And I'm sure vocal training can be helpful for some people... my point is, it's hardly a requirement.

Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years ago
You have vocal training?
nate... Back · 20 years ago
No, but, that's irrelevant.
Nik Chaikin Back · 20 years ago
lose it permanently eh?Let's hope so.
nate... Back · 20 years ago
We can always dream.

I don't know. On the one hand she's managed to perform a million horrible songs that made me want to cut my ears off. On the other hand, her early stuff wasn't so bad, up until Celine Chante Plamondon which I used to put on all the time at my parents' house.

Bad: she's hideous and has her own theatre in Las Vegas. For crying in a bucket.

Good: she's really funny. I saw either Wayne Brady or Ellen Degeneres interview her last year and she seemed like such a cool, funny person. Nothing like what I thought.

So I don't know.
soul groove feline Back · 20 years ago
ooh. i love that album. i sang "Je Danse Dans Ma Tete" at some sort of school talent show once. it was such a bad fit for my voice and i kind of butchered it, but it was fun.
K-Lyn · 20 years ago
I think she was exported by Canada to make people assume that all things from Canada suck...then they won't move there...or pay attention to other things Canadian...and we can happy harvest all the the awesomeness for oureselves.
elfy, teacher of many Back · 20 years ago
aw, MAN! now you've ruined it!

;)
renita · 20 years ago
i'm not the biggest celine fan.

okay, i'm not. at all. i avoid her music.

but come on people.

"she's hideous" "she's so ugly she could stop watches."

please.

so she's a mediocre performer who has made it big.well gee. we haven't seen that anywhere else before have we?

frankly, i think she's a lovely woman.

i still won't listen to her music though ;)

(which, while often trite, is still better than some other shite out there)

*joolee* · 20 years ago
I know I'm a minority in these discussions, but I like her, respect her, and think she has a good voice. I also like Barbara Streisand and on some songs even Christina Aguilera (very few songs).

Celine Dion not a singer-songwriter and I don't think you need to be one to be a good musican. I've heard some good songwriters who suck much ass at singing, but get away with it because their music rocks. There's nothing wrong with specializing.
stealthlori Back · 20 years ago
I'm with you on liking her voice, although I wish she'd emote a little instead of just singing loudly.

La Babs not only has a voice, but she *can* emote.

Christina I find hard to like. Although not as hard as Britney. :D

Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years ago
I've always been disappointed by Barbra's acting career, she didn't do nearly enough musicals and hardly any of real quality after Funny Lady. She was a good enough actress to win an Oscar. She had a voice meant for musical theatre and has such a small body of work. She could have been the greatest ever.
Bender Back · 20 years ago
sime could argue that she is, but I agree with you.

I would have loved to have seen her in more things
