So, did you write this one before or after you were kicked out of the ice maze?
lawrence Back · 19 years, 4 months ago
after, I think. I know we were discussing it that day, though. I actually think I didn't write it until I got home on Monday...
goovie is married! Back · 19 years, 4 months ago
we were discussing it like right after we were kicked out of the ice maze. i remember talking about it while we were standing across the street from the cn tower.
Annika · 19 years, 4 months ago
I don't get it. The books never kept my interest and when I watched the first film I was asleep within the first 15 minutes (which isn't a huge shocker as I rarely stay awake during a movie for longer than 15 minutes).
Beth · 19 years, 4 months ago
I voted for Lord of the Rings, but I think I was too hasty in doing so. Including LOTR, there are six things up there that I'm not interested in. But for five of those things, I can see the appeal, even if doesn't appeal to me personally. I should have said Homestar Runner, because I really don't get why that's so great to so many people.
Bel the ever forgetful Back · 19 years, 4 months ago
Well, I like it, but I can see how people wouldn't. If you're easily annoyed, then you definitely wouldn't like it. You also kind of have to have a sort of 5-year-old's sense of humour and ok-that-makes-no-sense-but-ill-laugh-anyway humour at the same time. Actually, looking at all those facts, I have no idea why it's as popular as it is :p
Talcott · 19 years, 4 months ago
I voted for fanfic, only because that was the one thing up there I have little or no interest in. It's not that I don't get it. I see the appeal, and I know why other people are into it, I'm just not.

If I could, I'd give the other half of my vote to LotR, but specify only the books. Yes, Mr. Tolkien, you created an entire world. That history would be more interesting, though, if you just wrote a history book instead of wrapping it around a fairly standard journey.
I do quite like the movies though.

I need to do half votes too... I voted for Pete Best, cause I don't know who he is, but I also don't get Hitchhiker's Guide. I mean, I read it a couple years ago...it was good, good enough that I got the sequel out of the library, but the sequel bored me. Now I don't even remember much about the book besides '42.'
I'd also give like an eighth of my vote to Homestar Runner, cause the only thing that I think is funny on there is "Teen Girl Squad." Those things are hilarious. I even had my desktop set at the part where Washinton, Lincoln, and the ?rapper?wrestler? are standing there, and Washington goes "Look, look at that girl!" Then they go tandem parasailing... :P
Mamalissa! Back · 19 years, 4 months ago
Pete Best was the Beatles' original drummer. He was replaced by Ringo at the request of some early managers. His name is sort of synonymous with "poor sap." I think his running-joke status on FHDC is a bit exaggerated (he often makes appearances in polls). but he's pretty much a running joke in the real world too. Poor sap.
caroline: tired. Back · 19 years, 4 months ago
OK..thanks for that interesting bit. I don't know much about the Beatles...
lawrence Back · 19 years, 4 months ago
I think it came from the 'favourite beatle' poll, where he was left out.

the funny thing I thought about when writing this poll is that the Pete Best option can be taken two ways - literally, not 'getting' Pete Best, but also not getting the FHDC inside joke about him. :)

(it almost reminds me of the Careless Santa bit from the tmbg mailing list, which possibly one or two people here are familiar with...)
It's a girl! Back · 19 years, 4 months ago
I don't get the massive appeal ofeither Harry Potter or Lord Of The Rings.
Bruce Rose · 19 years, 4 months ago
I think this will get me thrown out of the geek clique, but I just don't get HhGttG, and I'm not sure I want to get it. It just hasn't been explained in a way that a complete outsider would understand.
nate... Back · 19 years, 4 months ago
Have you read it?

I mean, I don't think there's anything that requires explanation.
Bruce Rose Back · 19 years, 4 months ago
Oddly enough, that's exactly why I haven't read it. If someone would say, "It's great, it's funny, I think you'd like it," or, "It's a fantastic thriller, you'd love it," or, "It's a completely different world... you HAVE to check it out," then I might go for it. If someone could compare it to something else that I've read/seen and enjoyed, then I'd go for it. But the, "What do you mean you haven't read it?? *holier than thou*" bit is getting really old. :-)
nate... Back · 19 years, 4 months ago
Oh... yeah... agreed.

I dunno... Someone just told me it was funny, so I read it.

He's one of the few authors who can make me actually laugh out loud. and... at times... laugh so hard I have to stop reading. :)

lawrence Back · 19 years, 4 months ago
it's not so much 'what do you mean you haven't read it?' as that, really, with any series of books, the best recomendation is 'read the first one.' or even with a single book, just 'read the first 50 pages.'

I'm not sure I could even describe it sufficiently, despite having pulled my user name from it.
Talcott Back · 19 years, 4 months ago
While I think that works for HHGTTG, if I judged a number of series off of the first 50 pages (His Dark Materials) or the first book (The Dark Tower) rather than a full recommendations, I would have never finished either series.

I would recommend HHGTTG for the humor and surrealism of it alone. It is sci-fi, but it's more a satire of reality than anything else.

Alternatively, if you were looking for something set more on Earth, (and with a few more literature jokes) you might want to start with Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency. Same author, but without the same cult following (which, if I didn't read the books back before I was online so much, would be a turn off for me as well)
Michael (foof) Maki Back · 19 years, 4 months ago
...wait a sec.

The Dark Tower is complete?

I dropped off in the middle of that horrible "The gunslinger's past" book.
Phoenix Back · 19 years, 4 months ago
awww.

I prefer the Dork Tower anyway ;-p
Talcott Back · 19 years, 4 months ago
It is.
The last three books came out pretty much within a year.

I like the fourth one, although it was a bit slower than the others.
If you really can't bring yourself to get back into it, you would probably be in decent shape if you just read the last section of the book (back with the full ka-tet in Kansas).

Trust me, the last few books are worth it, and I still maintain the series actually has a satisfying ending (to me at least)
Mamalissa! · 19 years, 4 months ago
Some funny things, but I can't get as enthralled as some seem to be.

Another one - the Lemony Snicket books. I guess I'm just one of those people who doesn't enjoy reading about the terrible misfortunes that befall orphans.
hkath Back · 19 years, 4 months ago
Whatwhatwhat? You've tried them and you don't like them? Or you don't like the *idea* of them?
Andrea Krause Back · 19 years, 4 months ago
I bought the first one and tried reading it but I just couldn't get into it. Got very bored.
Mamalissa! Back · 19 years, 4 months ago
Yep - read the first one, and just wasn't into it.
Kyla Back · 19 years, 4 months ago
Me neither. I read the first three, and they were interesting and cute, but by the time I started the fourth I was sick of the vocabulary lessons. I can see how they'd be good for kids, though.
caroline: tired. Back · 19 years, 4 months ago
They got old..especially when you're onto the ninth or tenth one. The movie however, was really strange. It was really....different. And all mixed up. It was supposed to be the first three, but the end of the first book turned out to be the end of the movie...and it was just...really strange. Jim Carrey didn't help either.
Bel the ever forgetful Back · 19 years, 4 months ago
The movie was absolutely awful. Don't see it. Period.

Although the books are awesome...conspiracy theories abound!
Kat Kunz · 19 years, 4 months ago
...because I'm on board, to varying degrees, with everything on that list. and I love that so far no one has any issues with Monty Python. :D who's seen Spamalot? how is it?
angelmusicmaven Back · 19 years, 4 months ago
Spamalot was GREAT, imo... I saw it twice on the pre-Broadway run in Chicago and was in tears laughing a lot of the time... between seeing David Hyde Piere dancing, Hank Azaria rescue the boy, Tim Curry on the "horse," and the Lady of the Lake with her Laker Girls... if anyone can get to this show they should spare no expense and see it.
ChrisChin is Getting Old Back · 19 years, 4 months ago
I'm seeing it on Wednesday. I'm so excited. *squee*
stealthlori · 19 years, 4 months ago
... i just don't go nuts for them all myself. i voted for fanfic, but it could just have easily have been LoTR or Homestar Runner.

it's totally a YMMV type thing. None of these things suck, they're just quirky and their appeal is kind of scattershot, so if you're not struck by them they seem pretty ordinary , and overhyped by enthusiasts.

and that goes for Lemony Snicket too. I understand the appeal, but it doesn't work for me. Andrew and I read the first couple and were like "meh".

i STILL need to read HHGttG. and no, nagging me or being astonished that i haven't yet read it won't do the trick. i'll have to be in the mood someday, and look for it on the library shelves and actually find it, and dig in.
caroline: tired. Back · 19 years, 4 months ago
Wow...you live near me. hee hee. that's cool. of course, that could be wrong. it says Dan lives 8 miles away, even though his house is like a couple blocks from mine. we go to the same bus stop.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 19 years, 4 months ago
You don't get LOTR and never read H2G2; Good thing you get Jurgen or I couldn't love you.
Bender Back · 19 years, 4 months ago
Jurgen is very... wanky.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 19 years, 4 months ago
If by "wanky" you mean brilliant.
Bender Back · 19 years, 4 months ago
no, by wanky I mean wanky. it reads like an exercise in literary masturbation.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 19 years, 4 months ago
Poor embryo, unable to appreciate Jurgen, maybe when you are older.
100% dainty! · 19 years, 4 months ago
I am a failed Tolkien fangirl. I have only seen FotR. I haven't read the books. I saw the Hobbit when I was little and it scared me and scarred me for life.

Phoenix · 19 years, 4 months ago
I voted for Pete Best. It isn't that I don't get the inside joke but his appearance on almost any fhdc polls begins to get downright annoying.

It's completely overdone IMHO.

but that's just me...
sheryls · 19 years, 4 months ago
..this poll tells me that if there was never a Moxy Fruvous, we probably would all be friends in a Python-centric fanverse ;)
lawrence Back · 19 years, 4 months ago
either that or the people who don't get Monty Python don't get one of the other things more. :)

it would be cool if we could assign percentage values to the answers in polls. or rankings.
derek harrison · 19 years, 4 months ago
especially! but harry potter as well.
all the rest i love! except pete best cause i only know of pete best because its always on option on every pole... and the last one, because im not too good for those options. well i guess i am. cause im explaining. but i didnt choose that one. SOTHERE!
