Frucon?

   Discussion: Frucon?
A.J. · 21 years, 10 months ago
I'm adding this thread because Gella's stalled and I think it probably didn't help to pull people in by having the main page announce that there were new messages in "6 months", so I'm naming this one in what I hope will be a more attention getting manner.

As of now, no Frucon 6 has been planned. That is not to say that it won't be, but as of now nothing has been done. A few of us on the committee are starting to look around and guage just how many people are interested in having this event. Kath has suggested that we hold a general meeting on IRC to talk and generate ideas. I think that is a great plan except I don't know how many of the interested people have ever done IRC chat.

My alternative thought was that we could hold a discussion here on this board, which should be accessable to most interested parties. If you look at the "6 Months" thread, you will see that there has been a little discussion, but not nearly enough.

I don't think the committee is going to be able to do it all for you this year folks . We really need a GOOD handle on who wants to go and what they want to find there. This one is going to require community participation like Con 1 did if it is going to happen.

So having said that, let's get talking and see what we can put together. Go read the "6 months" thread and then come back here and let us hear from you.

Yay to Toronto, mini-con, and 5 million pics of your cat!

Be sure to check out this poll for some other thoughts. There were 35 "I'd go to FC 6" responses, so there's a good amount of interest in the event.

I think it makes a lot more sense to discuss this on a forum here or elsewhere, since IRC chats are only accessible to those who happen to be able to make it at a given time. I'd be happy to put up some more polls as well. I think picking a weekend would be a good poll to think about, as well as "I'd go if it cost $.. or less". Later on, some event polls might be fun. Drop me a line when you want me to run these.

A friend and myself have been planning to go for two years now, but complications have gotten in the way every time we've started planning. But, that does make 37 definite "I'd go to FC6"'s =3

Even if there wasn't a show that weekend, bumming around Toronto would be fun (since I've never had the pleasure of visiting it, yet). I'd also love to have open mic and whatnot. Maybe the lads could stop in and say "hey" or something, even if they don't perform? *throwing out random tangents*

I'd love to go to Frucon again. I think me and Bill have a whole bunch of constipated songs to sing. Besides, I've already serenaded Angel. Now I'd serenade Kat with a wee little song. I just hope it does fall on Valentine's Day weekend again. Maybe the weekend before or after? Just a thought.

I would definitely like to come to Toronto for a Fruhead gathering in February. This is complicated by the fact of my being a broke college student, but that has never stopped me before. I always seem to somehow manage, with a little help from my friends.
What I would hope to get out of such a gathering is mainly just a chance to see and sing with my friends, and i really enjoyed the Lesters/Supers show last year... It shouldn't be too hard to convince those guys to play a show around there around that time, I think... if they're not already planning on doing so. Of course, as always, it would be beyond awesome if one or more of the lads showed up to hang or conduct or participate in some activity at the actual con (if there is an actual structured con at all) but of course, frulad participation is not necessary. It would just be a welcome bonus.
That's my 3 and a half cents.

John - do you think you could swing by Vancouver and pick me up? That airfare is a killer. ;-) Road trip!
Oh, and while you're at it, could you pop 'round to New Zealand?

There was good response to the game show thing... and I think we'd discussed more game shows (this time, with cheesy acts so we have something to gong?? *grin*). I think if people are going and have info/suggestions or something to contribute it can be a lot of fun

while I loved the frucon that I attended, airfare from Edmonton to Toronto (in the $600-800 neigbourhood) is usually pretty much out of my price range. Especially now that it looks like I'm going to be out on my ear after my birthday, I'm pretty sure that Tyco and I can be counted on to -not- be at whatever Fruhead gathering is held. :(
emilie is CRANKY Back · 21 years, 10 months ago
there should be a eurofrucon, and we should make the airline companies have like, a coupon day or something. *grin* :)
Eri Back · 21 years, 10 months ago
Eurofrucon? Okay, but you have to pay for my airfare! *L*

Ironically, it's often cheaper to fly overseas than it is to fly within the US.
(and yes, I realize you're in canada, so that may not apply.)
nate... Back · 21 years, 10 months ago
For instance: NY to SF - $280 roundtrip
Boston to London - $250 roundtrip
Go figure.
emilie is CRANKY Back · 21 years, 10 months ago
okay, it's decided then :D we can hold it in london, and you can all come crash at my place :D

Agent Scully Back · 21 years, 10 months ago
depends on what airport hub you're flying out of (the major ones will always have cheaper tickets than say, Rochester, Buffalo or Pittsburgh). These airports that are more expensive than others in cost in the US. At one point in time a few years ago, theywere trying to get the government involved in investigating why these airports charged more than the rest of them and that they were gouging the traveller.

I tried to get a RT ticket from Buffalo to Boston 60 days in advance to see a retinologist and the total cost for one person was $778. My esavers were better but you can't plan a doctor's appointment around that. The other option for us was Shuttle America but that went Kaput!

So, I'm just wondering if a frucon committee has been established at this point? I'd be more than happy to help out if someone has taken charge...
Snarki_Fru Back · 21 years, 9 months ago
well, we haven't actually established at this point (we meaning the community, not the committee) that its worth it. What I mean is, there hasn't been enough definite interest... and if people are interested they aren't saying anything. This forum and the forum(s) on frucon.org are samples of that.
Do people want a Frucon? if its just a handful of people that think maybe they'll get together and hang out and do nothing really all that organized... do you really need a committee to do that?
Snarki_Fru Back · 21 years, 9 months ago
i should probably add that I am NOT speaking for the committee, this is my personal opinion. I'm sure that something official will be decided and announced at some point

Angie

Agent Scully Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
So nothing official has been announced at some point in time? ;)
John J. Ryan · 21 years, 8 months ago
It is now 4 months to the mentioned Frucon 6. Grr to EFO playing at Hugh's Room in January instead of February: An EFO show would be a great lynchpin for a Frucon weekend.

Whatever happens, I'm looking forward to the weekend.
Drea Back · 21 years, 7 months ago
Alas, the EFO date at Hugh's Room appears to be no more *sigh* Not only has it not been listed on the last few emailers, someone else is now scheduled on the date they were supposed to be playing *grumble whine pout*
Talcott · 21 years, 8 months ago
Ok, so I don't have the time/experience to actually put much together, but I'll at least take the first step here...

Frcon VI
Toronto, Ontario
The weekend of Feb 15 2002

Now we need to set up (or reactivate) something either here or at frucon.org where people can sign up, so we can get an idea of how many rooms we'd be expected to get (assuming we want to do a block in the same hotel)

We should also find the cost of a common room, and then the ticket/regristration price would come from that (I don't know how much a room is, but I bet that if we just got 20 people (and I expect a bit more) it would be reasonable to split 20 ways)

The other thing that needs to be done is find some way to let the lads know this is going on. I'd still like to look into seeing if Fordy can do one of his educational shows for us, but even without that, I'm sure Jian, the Lesters, and/or Dave would be likely to have a show that weekend.

I think that so long as people are interested, we can do this. So long as we don't plan for a lot of people, all we need is a common place/time to meet.

So, um, that's my idea. I'm no good with pratical aspects though. If anyone wants to take over that part, feel free...

Thanks so much for trying to get the ball rolling again :)
John J. Ryan Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
The sound system. Instead of renting one, I can bring one myself. I can bring my Crate Taxi Battery amp, which has two inputs (One for a microphone, one for a guitar/keyboard). I can also bring the microphone and microphone stand, plus the keyboard I brought from last year should anyone want to perform anything during Proxy Fruvous/Gong Show on the keyboard.

That will save us money in terms of a sound system, and I can tell you my Crate has served me very well since I bought it last year.
Eri · 21 years, 8 months ago
I didn't make it last year, and I'm pretty darn sure that I can honestly say there's no way I can make it this year. I could maybe swing airfare one way.... that leaves a return leg and a hotel room that I can't pay for. This whole having to pay rent every month thing has sorta cramped my style when it comes to spending. ;) But I'm not saying that I won't try!
The Bad Bowler Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
I believe Jian is playing at Hugh's Room Feb 1st. I'm not sure if it's a performance or something else. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

I have been trying for years to actually get my ass to frucon, I have never been and I'll be damned if I'm gonna miss it again... cruel fate, my nemisis, you will not win!!! so count me in. although I don't think I'll be any good at helping with the planning seeing as I'm in maine....

if I have to start walking now I'll still be there.

A.J. Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
Where do you think the rest of us are, just up Yonge street from the hocky hall of fame? Almost everyone is hundreds if not thousands of miles away from Toronto. That doesn't mean you can't help plan. Espeically since the Frucon committe has decided that they are basically up for renting a room and maybe a TV for everybody and then leaving any events or whatever to the attendees. (That is an almost official announcement).

First thing we need to do is find out if the comfort suites is available.
zil Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
I was not trying to expunge myself from having to lift a finger in the planning of this. I'm actually just extreamly unreliable right now because of my health and mental issues and instead of saying it I was just going to leave it as some flip comment about being too far away. its not that I don't want to help I just don't want to dissapoint, let anyone down or leave anyone in the lerch. anyway I just wanted to thank you for letting that one slide....
A.J. Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
Hey, everyone does what they can. It's no biggie. I just hope you can come.
Shelly Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
ok...my $.02..........

i'd love to come.

i'd love to help.

my prob this yr is gonna be the time off of work, though i -may- be able to get a cheapish airfare thru work now, but we'll see.

but i do want to be there if there is one. i had a great time last year even though i was having major health issues. bleh.

so..yeah...lemme know if there's anything i can do to help.

word.

I'm also willing to pitch in since I'm fairly close to Toronto. If there is interest in setting up a Stephen Fearing show that weekend, I can check on his availability.

I believe Jian is playing at Hugh's Room Feb 1st. I'm not sure if it's a performance or something else. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Hasn't he bailed out on a few of his last performances in TO?
angelmusicmaven Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
I have word that the Hugh's Room show is a go. Which is making me a little less sure of coming up twice in a month (though I would friggin LOVE to...)
John J. Ryan Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
If he were smart, he'd book a show during Frucon weekend, knowing he could guarantee a sizeable audience.
A.J. Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
We'll he'd have to know there was going to BE a Frucon weekend first wouldn't he? ;)

I also hesitate to promise too much, becuse this year is going to be reall small. I suppose it all depends on your definition of sizable. We could probably get him 20 or 25 people. yeah. Is that enough? No clue.
John J. Ryan Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
That's about what I'm thinking, 20-25 people. I would consider that sizable, especially since several of those people wouldn't be going to the show otherwise.
angelmusicmaven Back · 21 years, 7 months ago
well, he does get a fair amount of people out to watch taping for the tv show-- and it's his hometown-- so I don't think he's worried about the audience factor... plus the club gets so many folk acts, some I've even heard of, coming through there I don't know how much freedon the artist gets on getting booked. Who knows?
Squee · 21 years, 8 months ago
I'm in the city and wouldn't mind helping out in ways that a Toronto girly can... Checking out locations, baking cookies, feeding snakes, sending bizarre postcards to Jian... Whatever.
I think that an open mic is in order. From what I've seen, it looks as though even if we don't have enough different perfomers to fill a decent chunk of time, those we do have can fill it for them, between John, Brigit, Art School Rejects, and I know I saw at least one other. That can fill an hour or two, for sure!
John J. Ryan Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
If you need an accompianist, I will gladly oblige, granted I know what song you want to sing.
Mike Only Back · 21 years, 7 months ago
Hey everyone.
I'm in a toronto band called MIT City. We're recording with Shelly berger (3 dog night, diana krall). David Matheson has agreed to lay some acordian tracks on the songs. They should be done by mid janary. Anyway I could play a set at the show. Maybe even try to drag david sorry ass down to his own party.
