I have a folder of 'Forbidden Music' with tons of N*Sync, 2gether, Destiny's Child, and other manufactured pop-ness. :) My ex-roomie and I even learned a dummed down dance to Bye, Bye, Bye. Yuck, my dirty secrets are out! :-\

"Punk-rock" is as close as I could get to alternative/modern rock -- for the Rochesterians in the crowd, I'm thinking "Zone Music."

Besides, who can lose with station ID's such as:

"Broadcasting from the 5th tallest tower in the country's 53rd largest radio market... huh, what? Oh, 54 now... isn't that impressive...?"

and

"We are Infinity Radio's biggest tax write-off..."

Neuromusic rules! Pinataland, Radiant Pig, Diana Froley 3, Bebe Eiffel. Real music with real instruments like kazoos and melodicas.

This is probably the best poll I've seen in a while... although the NASCAR and Pete Best polls are classy. I can say that I secretly listen to most of the choices (there's no dirty pop in my library), but my true closet music is the "pre-packaged for pop airplay" girl singers. It all started with Debbie and moved on to Britney and today's Avril obsession.

Punk and Proud! but a closet popster.
Andrea Krause · 22 years, 4 months ago
country's missing, right?

which...seems odd because it's a pretty major genre!
sheryls Back · 22 years, 4 months ago
yeah, i left out an "other" category too. bah, sorry. i was at work, bored, and then i got busy halfway through making choices!!
A girl named Becca · 22 years, 4 months ago
Heh...for once, I wasn't looking for an "other" or a "none of the above" but an....um.....(*cringe)...well, something like an "all of the above." (*Ducks.) I mean...my "Songs I Should Hate" mix, which I love includes Britney (and Christina...and Mandy....) and N'Sync, tecno, punk, rap, hip-hop, Limp Bizkit........etc. I ended up picking boy bands, however, because I come closest to respecting them as musicians as well as enjoying their music...yeah, I know they don't write music. But some of them actually sing, and sing very well, and in good harmonies...so it's a lot like musical theater, which has its merits in my opinion.
A girl named Becca Back · 22 years, 4 months ago
Oops. I take that back. I respect punk rockers as musicians, too, more than boy bands. But I can only take so much of that punky vocal quality....so I tend to enjoy boy bands more. I should probably run away before I get smacked or something. ;)

Not that 'new punk' crap either. Gimme The Ramones, The Clash or the Sex Pistols - although I wouldn't call it closet-music exactly. I'm a fan of music from any genre as long as I think it has merit.

No category for 'lounge' either. Barry Manilow and Tom Jones types. :-D
John J. Ryan · 22 years, 4 months ago
I guess this would be the closest to punk.
goovie is married! Back · 22 years, 4 months ago
And don't forget B-Blush or Boister! Neuromusic and Eurotrash (Neurotrash) represent!
Altho. The question asked about "closet music." And I'm not ashamed at all of my neuromusic love. I am ashamed, however, of the fact that I know all the names of the guys in BSB and 'N Sync. :)
sheryls Back · 22 years, 4 months ago
yeah but is that your *secret* obsession? ^_^
Misch · 22 years, 4 months ago
Perhaps Eric Schwarts' "Come Out Of The Closet" would be an appropriate choice? ;-)

Where do The Dead Milkmen fit in?
Andrea Krause Back · 22 years, 4 months ago
In shallow graves, covered in lye?
Josh Woodward Back · 22 years, 4 months ago
Punk! Dead Milkmen, to me at least, are the essence of real punk. None of this "pick up a guitar, turn it up to 10, hit some strings, and screech" crap. :-)
Kevin - King of WiFi · 22 years, 4 months ago
I like it all, and im proud, proud proud proud! *beats pot on head with wooden spoon*
sheryls Back · 22 years, 4 months ago
that's why i said "i'm a punk rock girl!" and to be fair, i put /boy. :D

i always think ramones/dead milkmen/sex pistols when i think punk.

w00t! i'll admit, i was torn by my own poll between punk and indie.

did you guys see the Stewart/Wil Wheaton rant? that was funny.
· 22 years, 4 months ago
there's always an OTHER!!!!!
not today!
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
heh!
and where's the choice for dirty old blues men?
:D

Um...I have nothing to add after my subject line. Ahem. Thank you.
zil · 22 years, 4 months ago
so I'm not the kind of person to have a "secret passion". its full in your face baby! I like folk... I also like to get the Led out... I like insane clown possy... and "its getting hot in here so take off all your clothes" ... I like frank sinatra... bbking... gladys night and the pips... elvis... sex pistols... ramones... clash... the theme to "night rider"... RAGE against the machine... chris issak... fraggle rock theme... ban harper... prodigy... I do have a slight problem with countery music... it makes me want to dig my eyes out with rusty grapefruit spoons.

*AHEM* The best I could do to find a category called "PHISH" was Indie Rock. I suppose it MIGHT fit, who knows.
